"Footprints In The...Soot"

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

Soot footprints These are footprints from soot on a hardwood floor.

Most of us have heard of the poem written in the early 1900s called, “Footprints In The Sand.” Well, what we witness often when responding to a fire damaged structure is the after effects, which is smoke and soot residue. When one walks on all of that soot, it makes unwanted and unappealing footprints.

It is important to know what type of smoke damage has occurred when cleaning up and restoring a structure. There are two different types: wet and dry. Our SERVPRO technicians are trained to know these different types in order to properly perform the cleanup and restoration.

  • Wet Smoke. (Plastic and rubber) Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, and smeary. Soot webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke. (Paper and wood) Fast-burning, high temperatures; heat rises, therefore smoke rises.

Pictured are several soot footprints on a hardwood floor and this type of smoke is wet, produced from a burning dehumidifier made mostly of plastic. Remember, this type is sticky and smeary and is more difficult to clean.

SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties are professionally trained to handle even the toughest of losses. If your home or business suffers fire or smoke damage, contact us to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Safety Tips For Power Outages in Red Bud, IL

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

Red candle Be prepared when there is a power outage in your neighborhood.

A raccoon accidentally chews on power lines, an ice storm in January, a car colliding with a utility pole. These are all examples of things that can cause a power outage. Power outages are often harmless, but if one were to occur during a heavy storm or flooding, the situation can quickly become very dangerous. It is beneficial to practice these power outage safety tips to save you and your property.

Things to do before a power outage:

  1. Stock a designated location with flashlights, batteries, and candles.
  2. Make sure you have nonperishable food that is easily accessible.
  3. Have carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home with a battery backup.

What to do in the case of a power outage:

  1. If there is extreme heat or cold, make sure to find a safe place where it is a reasonable temperature.
  2. Know what temperatures your medications need to stay within.
  3. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed so food stays cold longer.
  4. Unplug electronics so when the power comes back, they do not short out.

Things to do after a power outage:

  1. Determine the temperature of perishable foods to ensure that they are safe to eat.
  2. Discard any food items that have perished.
  3. If your medication has also perished, contact your doctor about what to do next.
  4. Be proactive and replenish stocks of batteries, flashlights, and candles for the next possible power outage.

SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties wants you to always be safe during any disaster. If your home or business has storm damage or you have any questions about power outages, call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Storm Water Carries Contaminants in Columbia, IL

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

Water on floor and carpet removed from storm water Our faithful technicians at work, extracting and cleaning Cat 2, Storm water.

Storm Water Starts at Cat 2

A Category 2 water loss refers to a source of water that contains a significant amount of biological, or physical contaminants and can cause sickness when exposed or consumed.

AKA “Grey Water,” this type of water damage carries microorganisms. This particular water loss came from seepage due to a construction mishap. The water intrusion came in through the basement walk-out door during a storm. Since no exterior sump pumps were installed, the “Grey Water” rushed right in.

After a full inspection we determined the water affected materials such as, carpet and padding, drywall and insulation. The technicians immediately began the extraction process with weighted and portable extractors. Carpet and padding, drywall and insulation were then removed. Cleaning began with our SERVPRO chemicals and to eliminate the threat from bacteria, they applied all affected areas with our anti-microbial spray. Our team then began the drying process by strategically placing air movers and dehumidifiers to increase air circulation, which lowers the inside humidity and helps dry both structural and personal property.

This home was protected from secondary damage because our SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties team responded quickly, performed a careful inspection, and remediated the Category 2, Storm water damage according to the proper dry standards.

Goodbye Smoke Smell - Purify Your Air With Ozone

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

Ozone generator machine We have ozone power contained in a green box.

Fresh Ozone

Do you remember your fifth-grade science class? Ozone is three oxygen molecules bonded together which makes up the layer that protects the Earth from harmful UV rays. Ozone can also be created when lightning strikes, which helps purify the air. We can harness that purifying power through devices called ozone generators.

What is an Ozone Generator?

Ozone generators produce small lightning reactions that produce ozone (O3) molecules. This actually changes the molecular makeup of the air, purifying it of any smoke molecules that may be present after a fire disaster.

How Does it Work?

When the ozone machine produces O3, those extra oxygen atoms attach themselves to smoke molecules, resulting in a molecule with a non-offensive odor. The addition of an oxygen atom to a molecule is a process called oxidation. With these generators, we are able to clean anywhere that air can flow, which is why it is so effective in the restoration of smoke-damaged homes or businesses.

Is it Safe to Use?

Too much ozone can actually damage certain materials such as textiles, leather, rubber, and certain plastics. However, in the hands of a professional, the ozone can be used competently to remove smoke odors without harming these items. When too much is inhaled, ozone can damage your lungs. When in use, the structure is closed and there should be no entry. Our technicians at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties are experts in odor removal and are trained in these matters.

If your home or business has a smoke odor that you just cannot get rid of, come to your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties. We have your back and can make any disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Don’t Let Carpet Spills Spoil Your Day

12/31/2020 (Permalink)

Coffee spill on your favorite carpet This coffee stain is no match for you today, you got this.

We all know what the first instinct is when it comes to liquids staining the carpet. Rush to the cabinet under the sink, grab all the chemicals you can, pick up five rags, spray the dirtied spot about fifteen times, then hope, nay, pray that intense scrubbing will aid the chemicals in bringing out that stain. However, there are a few issues with that. Let’s outline the best practices for when your favorite cup spills your favorite drink on favorite carpet.

  1. Always blot spills and liquid stains. NEVER scrub. Scrubbing pushes the stain particles further in the carpet fibers, making the stain harder to remove. Doing so can even accelerate deterioration. Instead, blot the stain starting from the edges and much of the stain can be removed without any cleaning supplies. Water works well to dilute the stain and helps the removal of colour by blotting.
  2. Club soda works wonders in the event someone spills beer or wine on your carpet. Pour a little bit of club soda on the stain, continuously blotting the area with a rag. If club soda does not do the trick, mix it with a bit of white vinegar and spray the solution on the stain. Let sit for 15 minutes and then blot it up.
  3. Scrape off stuck on debris. Instead of immediately going for the chemicals, try using a knife or another sharp object to remove things like stuck-on gum or candy before applying any moisture.

The best thing to do for your carpets is to call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties and have the experts clean your carpets. Deep cleaning carpets can remove stains, clear bacteria and dirt, and even make a whole room feel fresh. Contact us 24/7 for your carpet cleaning needs at (618) 464-0300.

OSHA RULES

When handling any sized disaster for your business, SERVPRO knows safety is top priority, and following OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) guidelines are of the upmost importance. For fire, water, and mold cleanup, it is up to us to be aware of any dangers and preventative measures. For the disaster restoration to go more smoothly, we at SERVPRO like to share those measures with you. For more information on OSHA guidelines, visit www.osha.gov.

Basic Safety Risks

These are a few safety tips that are essential for being safe in a home or business disaster.

  1. Sometimes structural integrity issues occur from fire or flood damage so don’t walk on surfaces that are not stable.
  2. Toxic chemicals can be produced from a water or fire disaster. Always wear boots and gloves to protect yourself.
  3. Damage done to structures or furniture can create sharp points or jagged edges. If you do get injured, use care when handling and cleaning any cuts or wounds.
  4. To prevent eye injuries from flying debris, dust, contaminated water, or chemicals, wear safety goggles.
  5. Avoid areas with carbon monoxide from propane, gas fired generators, or other equipment.
  6. When using ladders, always position at a safe angle, avoid any electrical wires overhead, and do not place on unstable surfaces.
  7. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and don’t overreach when using chainsaws or other power tools.
  8. Wear proper filtration masks/equipment when dealing with toxic fumes and mold spores.

At SERVPRO, we take OSHA guidelines seriously in order to keep our technicians (and you) safe. By sharing some of these preventative measures, we hope to make you aware of the standard we are held to so that you may stay safe as well.

Don’t Get Caught in a Blizzard Unprepared - Helpful Hints

12/30/2020 (Permalink)

A snowstorm Winter storms can be beautiful and dangerous. Call SERVPRO for your storm damage cleanup needs.

Our current pandemic we are all experiencing feels much like a mental storm or blizzard. An actual blizzard is a severe snowstorm with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibility of less than 1/4th of a mile for more than 3 hours. Traveling by car or foot is highly discouraged during blizzard conditions. It increases the chance of hypothermia, accident, and death. If you must travel by car during a blizzard, it is vital to have with you an emergency aid kit: water, jumper cables, road flares, tow rope, and non-perishable snacks.

To avoid hypothermia if caught outdoors during a blizzard, stay hydrated and nourished. Keep blood flowing by moving around. If it is safe to do so, build a snow cave to block winds that can reduce your body temperature. Avoid eating snow as well; it can actually make you colder! While keeping yourself safe, also think about the well-being of your animals by creating an emergency plan for your pets.

Before you receive a storm warning, be prepared. The loss of electricity means no hot water and heat, so stock up on non-perishable foods, blankets, flashlights, extra batteries, and candles beforehand.

If your home or business suffers from storm damage, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties 24/7 at (618) 464-0300. We are here to help.

Chester, IL Residents, Do You Have Your Water Damage Check List?

12/30/2020 (Permalink)

Picture of water damage in hallway. Five ways to protect your home or business from water damage with SERVPRO.

Even a small amount of water soaking into your floors, walls, or cabinets is enough to cause substantial damage in your home or business. Most often, pipe breaks and sewers backing up are the culprits when it comes to interior water damage. These following tips can help you minimize the risk in your home or business.

Proper Maintenance

Pipes can corrode, rust, and even freeze in the winter. It is important to maintain the pipes in your home to avoid a water disaster. Check your pipes and watch for any signs of leaks or bursts.

Water Bill

One way to make sure you do not have a pipe leak is to monitor your water bill. If you indeed have a leak, your water bill will most likely be increased compared to months past.

Visible Signs

Look for signs of rust stains, warping or swelling wood, and dark spots in the carpets or walls. These are telltale signs of water damage. By catching these signs of water damage early, you can save time, money, and property.

Sewer System

Have a plumbing professional install a backflow prevention if you are on a sewer system or are located below street level. If not installed, there is a risk of black water invading your home that can cost thousands in damage and cleaning.

Trees and Pipes

Make sure to plant trees away from lateral pipes. Tree roots can grow downward into the pipes, damaging them.

And Lastly

NEVER pour grease down the drain.

If your home or business ever suffers from water damage, call the pros. We have your back day and night, 24/7, 365 days a year. With our quick response times and efficient technicians, we can make any water disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Get Stoked for Chimney Maintenance This Winter Season in Valmeyer, IL

12/16/2020 (Permalink)

Get Stoked for Chimney Maintenance Protect your chimney today by taking these home-saving precautions.

Your chimney may seem like one of the most low-tech objects in your home, but if not properly maintained it can cause a chimney fire or even start a fire in your living room. As we all stoke our fireplaces to keep warm this winter, remind yourself to check for soot buildup often. The more you know about the dangers of chimneys, the better prepared you can be to prevent fires.

Creosote & Soot

Creosote, a combustible, tar-like substance, is a byproduct of burning wood. The more wood you burn, the wetter and greener the wood, and the less airflow the chimney gets, the more creosote builds in your chimney. This ruins ventilation and increases the risk of fire.

Buildup of soot in your chimney can also be messy. As the fireplace gets less and less ventilation due to soot sticking to the inside of the chimney, the more soot gets pulled back into the home, causing blackened carpets and floors. This kind of soot damage is difficult to clean without the proper professional equipment.

Tips

Following these tips is good practice to avoid fire damage in your home or business.

  1. Only burn dry, cured wood.
  2. Use only wood. Painted wood or other flammable materials may seem like good kindling, but can release chemicals into the air or cause more soot to build up.
  3. Close your damper when the fireplace is not in use to prevent warm indoor air from rushing out the chimney.
  4. Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors in your home.

If your home or business ever has fire damage, let the experts handle everything. SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties can completely restore any amount of fire damage you have. Call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Hail bouncing on a roof If you or someone you know suffer from a hailstorm, you can always call your neighbors at SERVPRO.

Hail storms are never a good thing to you and your property. They can put dents in cars and smash holes in homes and windows. Unfortunately, the damage does not stop there. While big chunks of ice can break things, the smaller, harder to detect pieces can cause as much if not more damage.

As hail is coming down, the smaller pieces can put dents in your shingles, allowing water to flow in. Sometimes this water stays hidden until finally: Boom! Your roof just caved in, and it’s now raining in your home.

Luckily, we at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties are experts in water and storm cleanup. The first thing we do is seal off any holes created by the hail to stop water from flowing in. HEPA Can HELP Your Business

11/4/2020 (Permalink)

HEPA vacuum image HEPA Can Help Your Columbia, IL Business

Mold is tricky to remediate. It grows rapidly and spreads millions of spores as long as it is allowed to sit. The worst part is, some things cannot be recovered from mold. If mold is growing on drywall, the only way to remove it is to cut out the entire section of affected drywall. Quick mold removal is essential when your stuff is on the line. One of the ways SERVPRO helps you recover from any mold disaster is through HEPA filters and vacuums.

HEPA

HEPA filters are heavy-duty filters that can capture particles in the air. When used properly, they are the most efficient way of removing mold spores from your business. HEPA filters are mostly found in our air scrubbers. We close off mold-afflicted rooms and create a negative-pressure environment, forcing all of the air through the HEPA filter-equipped air scrubber. This ensures that those mold spores are captured and destroyed, bringing the mold level back to natural levels.

Use in Fire Disasters

The use of HEPA filters and vacuums doesn’t stop there. They also prove useful in fire situations. Air scrubbers are used to remove smoke odors and HEPA vacuums are used to remove soot webs.

If your business is affected by mold, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties at (618) 464-0300.

  • Keep humidity levels in your home relatively low–no higher than 50%. Keeping your A/C running or using a dehumidifier will help keep the humidity level low.
  • Make sure there is air flow throughout the home. Use exhaust fans that vent outside the home in kitchen and bathroom areas.
  • Fix any leaks that may be in the roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have a source of moisture to grow on.
  • Have SERVPRO clean up and dry out your home fully in the event of a water loss or flooding.

Sprinkler System For Your Chester, IL Business

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

Sprinkler Systems for Chester Businesses

Businesses should have to worry about their day-to-day operations, not about the constant fear of fire damage in their building. One of the best ways to minimize potential damage, along with good practices and proper knowledge of fire extinguishers, is a sprinkler system. Sprinkler systems are highly-effective fire suppressors and can save a business from total loss. Here are a few things to know about sprinkler systems.

Sprinklers are Activated by Heat

It is a common misconception that sprinklers act as smoke detectors do and do just that: detect smoke. This is false, as sprinkler systems are activated by the heat generated around flames. This ensures that only certain areas are doused to minimize water damage to other parts of the building. The nozzle head, combined with water pressure, will spread enough water to the origin of the flames to fully put out the fire and save the building.

High-Pressure Water

Sprinkler systems deploy highly-pressured water when in use. The volume of water helps contain as well as put out the fire. There is no delay from activation of the system to the release of water, so as soon as they detect anything awry, water is immediately spread to affected areas.

Minimizing Damage

For some people, the first thing they think of when they hear ‘sprinkler system’ is: water damage. The truth is, while sprinklers can cause water damage, they also save businesses thousands or even millions of dollars in fire AND water damage. When sprinkler systems activate, only the spouts around the heat will shoot water and are efficient when it comes to containing and eliminating fire. This limits the damage to only areas affected by the fire. The amount of water damage caused by sprinklers is much less than the water damage caused by fire hoses.

Any fire disaster can cause damage, but with a functioning sprinkler system, the amount of damage can be drastically reduced, saving your business time and money. If your business requires fire cleanup, call SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties at (618) 464-0300.

The kind of puff back that mostly occurs from oil-fueled furnaces if they are not properly maintained.

Why Do They Happen?

Puff backs are small explosions in a furnace that cause soot to be pushed back into the home instead of through the ventilation system. They are usually caused by build-ups of dirt and soot in the ventilation, failing fans, and clogged filters.

How to Prevent Puff Backs

The only ways to prevent puff backs are to replace filters often and have a professional look at your furnace. As previously stated the largest cause of puff backs is lack of maintenance on furnaces. It is good practice to have all of your heavily-used appliances routinely checked.

In this Waterloo, IL basement, a puff back left minor damage on the wall, but this easily could have been much worse. The homeowners were left with only a small amount of soot that our SERVPRO technicians made quick work of. The incident provided an awakening for the residents, and they decided to have their furnace checked often.

Preventing Your Red Bud Dishwasher from Washing Your Floors

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

Dish-Washing Disasters

Think about how often you use your dishwasher. They are very convenient appliances that most people use on a daily basis. However, like any water-equipped machine, it could leak all over your home if not maintained properly. Follow these preventative strategies to avoid water damage from your dishwasher.

Ensure Proper Installation

In order to operate efficiently, a dishwasher should be level with all four legs securely planted on the floor. An unbalanced machine can result in increased wear and internal warping that may contribute to leaks.

Use Recommended Detergent

There are numerous brands of dishwashing detergent available on the market, but it is critical that you only use the detergent that is meant for your type of dishwasher. Using the incorrect detergent, such as dish soap, can cause excess suds, forcing water out of the dishwasher and all over your flooring.

Routinely Inspect Underneath Appliance

Many components of a dishwasher lie underneath the unit, so if water damage occurs you are unlikely to see it unless you routinely check. It is good practice to do so in order to avoid heavy water damage to your home.

Evaluate Door Gasket

If you notice pooled water in front of your machine, a damaged door gasket may be the culprit. Water lubricates this important component and helps prevent it from cracking. For this reason, you should use your dishwasher at least once a week. It’s also important to routinely inspect the seal for signs of deterioration and replace it as necessary.

SERVPRO Air Duct Cleaning for Steeleville Homes/Businesses

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

A man in an air duct Allow SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties to maintain the air ducts in your home or business today!

Did you know that the SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties can clean residential and commercial air ducts? Having your air ducts cleaned can sweep away years of dust and dirt and can help reduce the potential for damage and health risks.

Your ventilation system is most often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty air ducts can circulate odors and contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

Keeping your ductwork clean can potentially extend the lifespan of your equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition. In some circumstances, such as after a fire disaster or mold issue, duct cleaning may be an essential part of the cleanup process.

Duct cleaning, however, is not always necessary. We will make recommendations on how to deal with any indoor air quality issues you may have. This can save you money and provide you peace of mind on the health of your system.

If your home or business needs air duct cleaning, come to the experts. We can help you improve your air quality and keep your home or business safe. Call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Various OSHA safety signs Keep your piece of mind knowing that SERVPRO is OSHA certified and will take all the necessary precautions during any cleanup or restoration!

We at SERVPRO know businesses like yours have safety at top priority, so we follow OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) guidelines when handling any disaster. From mold disasters to fire cleanup, it is up to us to be aware of any dangers and preventative measures. We at SERVPRO like to share those measures with you to help your disaster restoration go more smoothly.

Wear proper filtration masks/equipment when dealing with toxic fumes and mold spores.

  1. To prevent eye injuries from flying debris, dust, contaminated water, or chemicals, wear safety goggles.
  2. Avoid areas with carbon monoxide from propane, gas fired generators, or other equipment.
  3. When using ladders, always position at a safe angle, avoid any electrical wires overhead, and do not place on unstable surfaces.
  4. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and don’t overreach when using chainsaws or other power tools.
  5. Always be alert on the job when trucks or other heavy equipment are being used.

At SERVPRO, we take OSHA guidelines seriously in order to keep our technicians (and you) safe. By sharing some of these preventative measures, we hope to make you aware of the standard we are held to so that you may stay safe as well.

Blowing Smoke in Nashville, IL Homes

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

A trailer home on fire with acrid smoke billowing Protect your home or business with our state-of-the-art fire restoration process at SERVPRO!

Did you know that there are different types of smoke that can affect your home or business after a fire? How the fire damage restoration cleanup is executed depends on the types of smoke we find. Here is a list of a few kinds:

  1. Fuel oil soot - Refers to smoke that backflows into a home from a furnace or fireplace.
  2. Wet smoke - Refers to smoke that results from plastics and rubbers that burn at low heat, causing a sticky, smeary substance to form. Can have a pungent odor.
  3. Dry smoke - Your average smoke. Comes from paper and wood burning at high temperature, sending the heat towards the ceiling along with black, billowing clouds.
  4. Protein smoke - Produced by evaporation of material rather than from fire itself. Protein smoke is virtually invisible, yet it discolors paints and varnishes and has an extreme pungent odor.
  5. Others - Smoke from tear gas, fingerprint powder, and fire extinguisher residue.

At SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties, we pride ourselves in learning about any kind of damage that can be done to your home or business. The better we understand the disaster, the better we can help make it “Like it never even happened.” If your home or business needs fire, smoke, or soot damage recovery, call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Wielding Nature’s Power in Your Okawville, IL Home/Business

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

A photo of an ozone generator With our ozone technology, your smoke damage will be a thing of the past!

Just as a refresher from fifth-grade science class, ozone is three oxygen molecules bonded together which makes up the layer that protects the Earth from harmful UV rays.

With these machines, we are able to clean anywhere that air can flow, which is why it is so effective in the restoration of smoke-damaged homes or businesses.

Is it Safe to Use?

Too much ozone can actually damage certain materials such as textiles, leather, rubber, and certain plastics. However, in the hands of a professional, the ozone can be used competently to remove smoke odors without harming your stuff. Our technicians at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties are experts in odor removal and can do just that.

If your home or business has a smoke odor that you just cannot get rid of, come to your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties. We have your back and can make any disaster “Like it never even happened.”

Preparing for Storm Damage at Your Columbia Business

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded benches Keep your home and belongings safe from storm damage with SERVPRO!

We know that storms don’t wait for anyone to be ready. That is why it’s so important to be prepared in advance. Knowing how to prevent damage to your assets can save you time and money in the long run.

Insurance

Make sure your business has storm damage insurance before disaster strikes. Contact your insurance agency to find the best coverage. You do not have to be located in a floodplain in order to qualify for flood insurance. Having this insurance can bring you peace of mind in case of an incident.

Equipment

If your building has a basement or lower levels, make sure your equipment/furniture is moved to a higher location. Other steps should be taken around the building as well to make sure flood water is sealed outside.

Documents

Keep your sensitive documents safe by sealing them up or moving them to a safe location. Certain things cannot be replaced with insurance, so make sure these things are taken care of as soon as signs of a storm appear.

Evacuation

Plan an evacuation route. This simple task can save you and your employees/co-workers from getting sick from flood water or from being stuck at your building due to road closings. This is a very important step in the preparation, as it can mean life or death in some extreme flooding situations.

ERP

Our Emergency Ready Profile can provide you with all of the knowledge you need to safely prepare yourself against a flood disaster. We provide a no-cost assessment to the document that has information on evacuation, shut-off valve locations, priority areas, and priority contacts. We strongly recommend that you have a plan for any disaster.

How Will Your Valmeyer Home Exterior Resist Flood Damage?

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

Vinyl siding Call SERVPRO for you interior storm damage or sewer backup restoration needs!

In some cases, storm damage can cause much more damage on the outside of a home or business than the inside. For example, sometimes the siding on a house or commercial building can endure the full brunt of flood waters. How well the siding can resist it, however, depends on what type of siding it is. These common types of residential siding have different success when it comes to withstanding flood or storm damage.

Vinyl

Vinyl is still one of the most popular kind of residential exteriors in the US. It also happens to repel flood waters very well. While individual panels may crack, the integrity is still maintained. Panels are easy to replace and clean after flooding.

Brick

Brick siding has two sides of the coin. For one, it is successful in repelling flood water, but it is very costly to repair or replace. It is also more time-consuming to repair than simply replacing vinyl panels. Lastly, water can get into pockets in the mortar, causing water damage over time. It is good practice to have your siding looked at after any flood disaster.

Stucco

Stucco exteriors are likely to chip and break during floods. While, like vinyl, it is cheap and easy to repair, it cannot repel flood water successfully.

Metal

Metal is the most capable in a flood-like disaster. Most of the time, all metal siding needs after a flood is cleaning and repainting. It is not the cheapest siding, but it weathers the storm when it comes to flood damage.

If your home or business has interior flood or storm damage, or you have any questions about how the exterior of your building will withstand storm damage, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties. We have your back 24/7, and can get any job done quickly and efficiently. Contact us at (618) 464-0300.

Water Heater Malfunctions: Keeping Your Showers Safe in Chester, IL

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

We use our water heaters tirelessly. Whether it comes to cleaning dishes, taking showers, or washing hands, we rely on them to fulfill our hot water needs. If not properly maintained, these devices can not only be unable to heat water, but can break and fill your home with water. However, with the right preventative steps, you can avoid this altogether.

Lifespan

Your average hot water heater has a lifespan of about 10 years. If not replaced in this time, it can start to slow down and not heat water as fast, or shoot water around your home due to leaks and breaks. It is a good idea to have your water heater replaced about every 10 years.

Parts

Hot water heaters aren’t perfect and can often have problems other than being too old. Sometimes, heavily-used parts of the machine, like gaskets, can rust or wear down, causing leaks. Frequently check your water heater for any signs of damage or rust to any parts.

Signs (Not the Movie)

There are a few ways that you can tell if your hot water heater has deteriorating components:

  1. Strange color of hot water
  2. Strange odor of hot water
  3. Leaks
  4. Strange noises coming from the machine

If you stay vigilant when it comes to your hot water heater, you can enjoy years without hot water heater incidents or water damage. We at SERVPRO want homeowners and business owners to know the risks and preventative measures when dealing with hot water heaters so you don’t run into disaster.

If you do have water damage due to a hot water heater malfunction, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Blizzards!

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

A picture of a snowstorm Protect yourself this Winter season and call SERVPRO for your storm damage cleanup needs!

A blizzard is a severe snowstorm with winds in excess of 35 mph and visibility of less than 1/4th of a mile for more than 3 hours. Traveling by car or foot is highly discouraged during blizzard conditions. It increases the chance of hypothermia, accident, and death. If you must travel by car during a blizzard, it is vital to have an emergency aid kit: water, jumper cables, road flares, tow rope, and non-perishable snacks.

To avoid hypothermia if caught outdoors during a blizzard, stay hydrated and nourished. Keep blood flowing by moving around. If is safe to do so, build a snow cave to block winds that can reduce your body temperature. Avoid eating snow as well; it can actually make you colder! While keeping yourself safe, also think about the well-being of your animals by creating an emergency plan for your pets.

As soon as you receive a storm warning, get prepared. You could lose electricity, including hot water and heat, so stock up on non-perishable foods, blankets, flashlights, extra batteries, and candles beforehand.

If your home or business suffers from storm damage, call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Carpet Cleaning Catastrophe

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

A picture of a spilled mug of coffee Don't let that big spill soak into your carpets! Instead, call SERVPRO 24/7!

Let’s outline the best practices for when your favorite cup spills out your favorite drink on the carpet.

  1. Always blot spills and liquid stains. NEVER scrub. Scrubbing pushes the stain particles further in the carpet fibers, making the stain harder to remove. Doing so can even accelerate deterioration. Instead, blot the stain starting from the edges and much of the stain can be removed without other cleaning supplies.

The best thing to do for you carpets is to call your local SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties and have the experts clean your carpets. Deep cleaning carpets can remove stains, clear bacteria and dirt, and even make a whole room feel fresh. Contact us 24/7 for your carpet cleaning needs at (618) 464-0300.

Preventing Water Damage for Chester Residents

12/30/2019 (Permalink)

A flooded hallway Protect your home or business from water damage with SERVPRO!

A small amount of water soaking into your floors, walls, or cabinets is all it takes to cause substantial damage in your home or business. Most often, plumbing pipes and drain systems are the culprit when it comes to interior water damage.

Make sure to plants trees away from lateral pipes.

It is important for your pets to have an ID on them at any given moment, but especially during a disaster. They can easily be traced if they are properly identified which can make finding them much easier. If an animal is lost, any found pet alerts will contain better information on your animal. Saying that, it is good practice to also check for found pet alerts, as most people in a community would help you find your pet.

Keep Up With Vaccinations

Having your pets’ vaccinations up to date reduces the risk of them getting sick while a disaster occurs.

Your safety is important, but so is your pets’. These practices will ensure that your pets stay happy and healthy during any ordeal.

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

A hotel in Sparta, IL Keep your business safe with our expert services.

Not knowing when a disaster might strike can create severe problems for your hotel in the Sparta area. SERVPRO can help business owners recover quickly after a crisis. When water covers floors and makes a mess, safety also becomes an issue that can cause problems for guests, particularly those with mobility concerns.

Hotels and other hospitality-based businesses rely on their guests to keep their businesses vibrant, and when soaked and saturated, commercial water removal in Sparta can restore normal operations. SERVPRO knows that this needs to happen quickly, especially when bookings and current guests rely on your ability to provide their lodging when expected. We always consider the needs of both your staff and your guests as we perform extraction and drying services.

When the water's depth reaches more than a couple of inches high, we use our truck-mounted and portable submersible pumps. They pull the water out of rooms, halls, and other areas. However, these areas remain damp and prone to developing problems. Our SERVPRO technicians can also contain both mold and odor-producing substances, which help you keep your hotel interior a safe environment.

We continuously monitor the progress we make in drying out your hotel. Our technicians use both infrared thermal imaging cameras that locate damp areas and highly accurate moisture meters that help us determine when an area is reaching an acceptable percentage of moisture.

We highly recommend Sparta businesses request information about our Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) before a disaster happens. We can visit your building and provide you with the necessary tools to prevent or mitigate disaster. Because water can invade into the tiniest areas of your business and cause enormous levels of damage, the time saved by our ERP can significantly reduce the expenses involved in recovering and restoring your business.

SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties provides water removal and extraction services 24/7, so if your business has water damage, contact us at (618) 464-0300.

Get Stoked for Chimney Maintenance this Winter Season in Valmeyer

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

A chimney on fire Protect your chimney today by taking these home-saving precautions.

Your chimney may seem like one of the most low-tech objects in your home, but if not properly maintained can cause a chimney fire or even start a fire in your living room.

Fallible Bleach

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

A picture of bleach Learn more about mold and how to deal with it on the mold tab of this website!

Many times, bleach is thought of as an all-powerful chemical that magically destroys problems like mold. Unfortunately, this is untrue. While bleach seems to fix everything, in reality it can be just a temporary solution to a growing problem.

Looks can be Deceiving

Typically, when you use bleach on mold, it can clear off the top layer making it look as if the mold has been removed. Mold grows by sticking its roots into the material that it is attached to. This means that if bleach is used, the top, visible layer has been removed, but the roots are still attached. Now, you have an invisible problem that keeps on growing.

Bleach Loses Effectiveness

Over time, bleach in your home or business loses effectiveness. As bleach sits, the chlorine within the jug evaporates, leaving you with an inadequate cleaning solution that still does not fight against mold.

Bleach is Toxic

Some people swear by bleach. Why use anything else when you can obliterate any and all bacteria and dirt using it? This brings up another issue with using bleach too often. While it can be an effective cleaning solution, it produces fumes that pollute the air you breath, making the area unsafe for children, pets, and even you.

OSHA and EPA Don’t Like it

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency don’t like it either. Trust them, they know what they are talking about.

At SERVPRO, we want your home and business to be safe from mold issues. The more you know about the dangers of mold growth, the better you can prepare for it should it rear its ugly head.

Should you need mold remediation and cleanup, call your local experts, SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties. We are here to help 24/7 and can tackle any mold issue you may have. Call us today at(618) 464-0300.

Ventilation: Best Mold-Fighting Tactic in Your Chester Home

12/16/2019 (Permalink)

Mold grows surprisingly quickly in humid environments and there are many places in homes that are prone to mold growth. Bathrooms, kitchens, attics, and basements have the highest chances of mold growth because humid air tends to circulate through these rooms. Proper ventilation, however, can keep the moisture from sitting in the air, thus saving you from mold damage. It is good practice to take steps to ensure that the air is circulating properly in your home.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are the most important rooms to focus on. They are typically compact and frequently have warm, moist air cycling through them. Without good airflow, bathrooms can quickly become a breeding ground for mold.

Attics

Attics are also susceptible to mold growth for the reason that they are commonly unkempt and/or unfinished. If warm, moist air is able to rise into the attic, you may never know you have mold until it has already caused damage. Regularly check your attic for mold and make sure that is has plenty of ventilation.

Basements

Basements are particularly vulnerable because they can become flooded or have small leaks that are hard to find. It can be difficult to root basement mold growth out, even if it produces an odor. It is good practice to keep a dehumidifier in humid basements to ensure that no mold can grow in the cracks and crevices.

Hail bouncing on a roof If you or someone you know suffer from a hailstorm, you can always call your neighbors at SERVPRO.

Sprinkler Systems for Chester Businesses

10/24/2019 (Permalink)

Best Mold Practices

A moldy chair found in a Red Bud, IL home This moldy chair was found in a Red Bud, IL home. It could happen to anyone!
  • Clean areas with an antimicrobial to prevent any future mold or mildew growth.
  • Remove or replace carpet and upholstery that have been saturated with water and were not dried properly and/or right away.

Uphold Your Upholstery in Steeleville, IL

A couch with mold A couch overtaken by mold in Steeleville, IL

With the hustle and bustle of day-to-day activities, it is easy to forget some smaller aspects of your business. One of these aspects that need attention is your furniture. Whether you have a waiting room, office, or lounge area, your furniture needs to be cleaned. Commercially-used furniture often takes a beating. However, if properly maintained, they can survive for much longer.

Promoting a Healthy Environment

A great way to liven up a room is by cleaning the furniture. Think about how much dirt and pollen can attach to a chair or cushion near an open window. By frequently cleaning the material, people with allergies can have an easier time breathing and the room can be less stuffy. Bacteria and germs can also be removed during cleaning which promotes a healthier environment.

Freshening Up

Certain materials are really good at holding onto odors. By cleaning furniture you can get rid of foul odors that cling to the material. For example, if an employee heats fish in the lounge microwave, the furniture will smell like that fish for a long time. It is not very pleasant. Cleaning furniture can deodorize as well as sanitize it.

Saving You Money

Obviously cleaning and maintaining your furniture is not free, but by clearing out the bacteria, dirt, and odors, your furniture will last much longer, thus saving you money in the long run. This is just one of the ways we at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties show how much we care about our local businesses.

Power Outage Safety in Columbia Homes

4/1/2019 (Permalink)

A squirrel eating power lines, an ice storm in February, a car colliding with a utility pole. These are all examples of things that can cause a power outage. Power outages are often harmless, but if one were to occur during a heavy storm or flooding, the situation can quickly become very dangerous. It is beneficial to practice these power outage safety tips to save you and your property.

Things to do before a power outage:

  1. Stock a central location with flashlights, batteries, and candles.

  1. Find the temperature of perishable foods to ensure that they are safe to eat.
  2. Throw out the food items that have perished.
  3. If your medication has also perished, contact your doctor about what to do next.
  4. Replenish stocks of batteries, flashlights, and candles.

SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties wants you to always be safe during any disaster. If your home or business has storm damage or you have any questions about power outages, call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

We’re Drying Them With Science

4/1/2019 (Permalink)

As simple as it may seem, there is actually a science behind drying. Psychrometrics is the study of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures and is the fundamental science backing our drying processes. Some may think it is sufficient just to lay down towels or place a fan in front of affected areas, but that could allow deep-set water to cause damage without you knowing. Let the experts handle your water issues.

We Have the Know-How

We at SERVPRO follow strict industry standards when it comes to recovering your home from water damage. With our state-of-the-art drying equipment and techniques, we can quickly and efficiently return your home or business back to pre-disaster condition. SERVPRO also provides a 24/7 emergency response service so we can assist with your water disaster any time, day or night.

HEPA is the Right Choice in Your Waterloo Home

3/23/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is tricky to remediate. It grows rapidly and spreads millions of spores as long as it is allowed to sit. The worst part is, some things cannot be recovered from mold. If mold is growing on drywall, the only way to fix it is to cut out the entire section of affected drywall. Quick mold removal is essential when your stuff is on the line. One of the ways SERVPRO helps you recover from any mold disaster is through HEPA filters and vacuums.

HEPA

HEPA filters are heavy-duty filters that can capture particles in the air. When used properly, they are the most efficient way of removing mold spores from your home.

Shockingly Simple

3/22/2019 (Permalink)

Preventing electrical fires can be fairly easy… Taking care of one is a little more difficult. Electrical fires account for about $1.1 billion in property loss every year according to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Agency). To keep yourself and your property safe from electrical fires, follow these simple steps.

Crowded Outlets

Try not to overcrowd outlets. Too many electrical appliances plugged into a single outlet or power bar can start an electrical fire. Try to spread things out as much as you can and monitor the outlets for any signs sparking.

Check Your Wiring

Always check the wires or cables you use with your electrical appliances. Using faulty wiring or cables is very dangerous and can lead to an electrical fire. Make sure the appliance you are using is also working properly by testing it thoroughly before you put it to use.

Worst-Case

If an electrical fire were to start in your home, do not try to put it out with water. Doing so could electrocute you or make the fire worse. The best thing to do is to try to unplug the power source if possible. Smother the fire using baking soda or a class C fire extinguisher. If the fire is still growing after these steps, do not continue to try to fight it. Leave the area and call the emergency services.

Being knowledgeable of the dangers of electrical fires can help you avoid them and avoid property damage. If your home or business does experience an electrical fire, allow SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties to restore everything back to pre-disaster condition. Call us 24/7 at (618) 464-0300.

Fire Extinguishers

3/21/2019 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers, when used correctly, can be life and property saving tools. In order to operate an extinguisher, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests remembering the word PASS.

Pull the pin. Hold the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.

Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.

Sweep the nozzle from side-to-sde.

Read the instructions on the fire extinguisher and become familiar with them before a fire breaks out. Remember, extinguishers to have limitations. Mold in Your Waterloo, IL Basement

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

Mold left unchecked can cause massive damage to a home or business.

Any home or business can quickly be taken over by mold if a source of water is present. Even just a small leak can lead to a mold disaster. This basement in Waterloo, IL was overcome by mold spores when the home sprung a leak in two places. The mold was left sitting too long and the results were horrific. To keep your home or business safe from mold take note of the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has mold issues, call your local experts at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties at (618) 464-0300.

Caged Mold

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

Don't tap on the glass. You'll freak out the spores.

The Process

All of our highly-trained technicians at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties know that quick containment and filtration is the crux of remediating mold from your home or business. The first step in the process is to cut off the mold from the rest of the building to keep spores from traveling freely. We tightly seal off rooms using heavy-duty plastic ducting and begin the filtration process. Air scrubbers are then set up to create negative pressure in the mold-affected area. If the mold is not sealed off from the rest of the building, the negative pressure method will fail and the mold will not be remediated, which is why we take the first step so seriously.

If YOUR home or business is suffering from mold damage, contact our 24/7 emergency service. As your neighborhood SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties, we will not stop until your mold issue is solved.

What is Causing Home Fires?

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

The after-effects of a home fire.

We at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties know that the more informed our neighbors are, the safer they are from disasters like home fires. There are many causes of home fires, but some are more prevalent than others. We listed out the top five causes of home fires below:

#1 Cooking

The leading cause of home fires in the United States is cooking. Most often, these fires are caused by unattended stoves or ovens. Grease fires also heavily contribute to this statistic because of their unpredictable nature and unconventional methods to deal with them. If you ever have a grease fire in your home, DO NOT use water. Rather, use a metal lid, ample baking soda, or a fire extinguisher to suffocate it.

#2 Heating Appliances

Devices such as space heaters and furnaces are also susceptible to catching objects around them on fire. Much like with cooking, heating appliances left unattended can cause heavy fire damage. Check on your heating appliances for signs of damage or misuse often to avoid fire in your home.

#3 Electrical Gear

For electrical gear, often it is too many appliances plugged into one outlet, or an overheating/overused appliance that will start the fire damage in a home or business. Make sure your home or business stays safe by checking outlets for black marks or signs of sparking.

#4 Intentional

Unfortunately, arson is the number-four cause of fires in the United States.

#5 Smoking-Related Accidents

Always practice safe smoking habits if you or someone you know smokes in your home or building.

SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties is there for you in any fire damage situation, 24/7. If your home or business suffered fire damage of any kind, call your local experts at (618) 464-0300.

Basic property insurance is a must, but we urge you to search for more specific coverage. Talk to your insurance agent to see what kind of coverage you can get to protect your belongings.

For example, property insurance will cover the general repairs such as water damage due to leaks and other external factors, but flood and storm insurance specifically target the kind of prolonged water damage you can get from floods or the damage caused by hail.

We at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties want only the best for you and your business, so do not hesitate to call the experts at (618) 464-0300.

Water Damage Categorized

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

There are different types of water damage, some more harmful than others. Knowing about the different kinds is essential to keeping yourself safe when a water disaster hits your home or business. While you may be thinking, “It’s not like I’m going to drink the flood water in my basement,” it is more than just ingesting the water that can cause harm.

Category 1 Water

Category 1 Water is the cleanest. It refers to water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and is classified as “clean water”. Examples include water supply lines, tub or sink overflows, or appliance malfunctions that involve a water supply line.

Category 2 Water

Category 2 Water is the kind you need to watch out for. Known as “grey water”, this kind refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological, or physical contaminants. This kind of water can cause discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to. Grey water carries microorganisms and nutrients of microorganisms. Examples are toilet bowls, sump pump failures, and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Category 3 Water

Category 3 Water is grossly unsanitary. It is known as “black water” and can contain unsanitary agents and harmful bacteria and fungi. Being exposed to or ingesting black water can cause severe sickness. Category 3 Water refers to water sources that affect the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water, or standing water. Category 2 Water that is not promptly removed form the structure and/or has remained stagnant may be reclassified as Category 3 Water. Toilet back flows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination.

Our air movers and dehumidifiers work together to get the moisture out of the air and out of the walls and floors. Sometimes our centrifugal air movers are called ‘fans’, but their blades do the job differently. They pull in air from the room into curved fins that rotate forward, increasing the velocity of the air that is pushed out using centrifugal force, effectively creating air movement around the room to facilitate drying.

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

Nursing homes have many rooms with lots of plumbing and equipment that rely on pipes for water. If one of these pipes were to leak or break it not only affects the building, but also the patients and staff. Our SERVPRO technicians were able to find the source of the leak and quickly began setting up drying equipment. Preparing for Bad Weather

12/28/2018 (Permalink)

We at SERVPRO want you to be prepared for any disaster!

Weather is unpredictable even for those whose job it is to predict the weather. That’s why it is good to be prepared for any storm disaster. SERVPRO encourages you to follow these tips so you keep yourself and the things that matter to you safe during bad weather.

Reliable Light Sources

Along with flooding and other carnage, storms can knock out the power leaving you in the dark. The darkness can prove dangerous when you are trying to follow other necessary steps to stay safe during bad weather. With reliable light sources spread throughout the home, such as waterproof flashlights, glowsticks, and lanterns, you will be better prepared for the disaster at hand.

First Aid

First aid is important in any home, but especially during bad weather. Damage such as splintered debris and wet floors caused by storms can be hazardous to your health. An easily accessible first aid kit would be invaluable in these situations.

Caution

The damage storms cause to a home or business can be as unpredictable as the storm itself. For example, if flooded water comes into contact with a live electrical wire, you now have a fatal hazard. If you experience a large amount of standing water in your home or business, be cautious around it. Immediately call your SERVPRO storm restoration experts and allow our technicians handle everything.

Worries of Winter Weather

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

A burst pipe found in a New Athens, IL home due to ice blockage.

Winter weather can mean more than just slippery roads and snowmen to make. There are large threats of water damage to your home during the winter months. The more you know about them, the better you can prevent these issues.

Frozen Pipes

If not handled properly, pipes in your home can burst due to pressure built from frozen water blockages. The best ways to prevent this are:

  1. Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.
  2. Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.
  3. When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  4. Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night

Ice Dams

Most people have never heard of an ice dam, however, they can be a major problem during winter. Ice dams occur when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed by ice stuck to the gutter. When the trapped water cannot safely flow into the gutter system, it can backflow into the house, causing water to enter through the roof and forcing the shingles to shift. Preventing ice dams is as easy as removing ice and snow from your roof and gutters to ensure that water flows where you want it to.

If you have water damage due to burst pipes or ice dams this winter, call SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties at (618) 464-0300

Truth About Mold

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

We stop at nothing, even if white clothes are on the line!

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. This means that there is no such thing as “mold removal” as some businesses will advertise. There is, however, such a thing as mold remediation. Our mold remediation reduces the mold spore count in your home or business back to a natural level.

Mold Facts

  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air. That means that they may enter your home through windows, doors, AC/heating systems, or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water which may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor which can aid in finding the problematic areas.
  • Indoor humidity should be kept below 45%. Homes with higher than 45% humidity are susceptible to mold growth.

Call Us at 618-464-0300

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph and Washington Counties can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Spider Webs VS Soot Webs

11/7/2018 (Permalink)

The soot webs have been spun.

Soot webs found after a fire in Chester IL

When I arrive to a home fire the owners are always embarrassed at all of the spider webs on their walls. This gives me a chance to help make them feel a little bit better about themselves by giving them the soot web speech.

The “dirty spider webs” along the edges and corners of your ceiling aren’t spider webs, they are "soot webs!"

With a sigh of relief, I explain, these features, called soot webs, form when ionized (i.e. has an electric charge) soot particles stick together in chains. They gather along the edges between your walls and ceiling because those areas tend to be cooler, which smoke likes to move to.

And there you have it, the soot web has been spun.

If you do have soot webs, don’t try to clean them yourself, call SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph & Washington Counties and we can help make it "Like it never even happened." 618-464-0300

Deodorizing Smoke odor with Hydroxyl

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

These UV optics create the Hydroxyl Radicals that elimate smoke odor

When fire or smoke damage strikes your Waterloo home or business you need the restoration experts at SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph and Washington Counties to come to the rescue.

One of the questions we get on nearly every fire job is, "Will this odor ever go away?!". When we are on the job we can say, "Yes it will!". But not on it's own, we will help it to leave by utilizing industry leading technology such as a Hydroxyl Generator.

Hydroxyl is a free radical found in nature created by the Sun's UV rays and water vapor.  These radicals clean our air everyday of harmful compounds. a Hydroxyl Generator creates these free radicals and they in turn begin to destroy odor molecules in the home. Hydroxyl is effective on many types of odors but really shines on fire restoration.  It is completely safe to breath so the machine can be run throughout the restoration process so that when your home is restored to it original condition it smells fresh as well.

Waterloo, IL Smoke and Soot Clean up

3/23/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Waterloo Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph, and Washington Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Does your Columbia, IL Home Have a Mold Problem?

11/2/2017 (Permalink)

This is mold on the wood frame as well as the insulation from an outside leak.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Monroe, Randolph and Washington Counties can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
